This course explores what makes Tamil a major classical language by examining the historical, grammatical, and literary foundations of Sangam literature. Led by the insights of Professor George Hart, learners will investigate the dating evidence, unique linguistic identity, and minimal Sanskrit borrowing that define early Tamil. Ultimately, participants will read and appreciate select ancient poems, connecting deeply with their distinctively secular and human-centered themes.
